If You Can’t Attack the Message: Attack the Messenger   By Dalmar Kaahin
    June 01, 2009
To call me a “Priest” or cast aspersion on my character perhaps alleviates NSUM and Dr. Megalommatis’ throbbing pains form their failure to convey their Somali unity “message” but won’t get them off the hook. Nor will I digress from the main topic: exposing their poorly rehearsed fabricated stories.

In three articles entitled,” The High Priests of Somaliland Secession”, "A response to: When NSUM’s Mission Report Fails The Mission" and "The Dissolution of Somaliland–Part VI. Dalmar Kaahin’s Crocodile Tears and the Hargeisa Sewerage", slanders unleash a barrage of personal attacks against not only me but also Somaliland supporters.  Here are their articles: http://tinyurl.com/nbh2n8 , http://tinyurl.com/nhbfms and http://tinyurl.com/dn4jc2

Instead of debunking reasons as well as historical facts that compel Somaliland to divorce Somalia, the NSUM shamelessly compares Somaliland patriots to Israeli zealots and Nazis propagandists. What a counter-productive strategy!

In addition to their ill-conceived strategy, throughout their articles, as if there isn’t enough horrific violence to discuss in Somalia, they focus on my name. Although my surname Kaahin is a pure Somali name, one of the writers namely, Ali H Abdulla chose to demonize it. For some odd reasons, Mr. Abdulla translates my name to a Priest. This is bizarre. But if that makes his day, so be it!

The second writer: Osman Hassan repeatedly substitutes Dalmar Kaahin for Dahir Kaahin, however; www.maanhadal.com administrator corrects the deliberate twist.  But what is going in his mind? Whether twisting my name is a slip of the tongue or a sever case of tongue-tie Mr. Osman, just like Mr. Abdulla, horns his trash-talking skills instead of refuting my assertions.

Mr. Abdulla also accuses me of deliberately twisting one of his statements. However, once you examine the statement in question, rest assured it will be clear to you what he means. In his article entitled, “Challenges to Somali Unity and Sovereignty” he states, “The Federal Government and the resistance movements need to wake up to this danger and start waging a political war against the dangers looming in the horizon.” The “danger” Mr. Abdulla warns in his article is not Alshabaab suicide bombers, but it is Somaliland’s quest for independence. Also, two resistances of movements: Alshabaab and Hizbul Islam wage a brutal war against the Somali government. Alshabaab and Hizbul Islam also never wage political war but detonate suicide bombs.  Yet Mr. Abudulla flips out when I protest that he demands Alshabaab terrorists to attack Somaliland. Other than Alshabaab or Hizbul Islam what resistances of movements does he have in mind? See my rebuttal to his article: http://tinyurl.com/ocjppr

Worse yet, NSUM sympathizers flood my e-mail inbox not with rebuttals to my article entitled, “Somalia: When NSUM's "Mission Report" Fails "The" Mission“but with physical threats and insults. Here is my article which infuriates the NSUM cliques: http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/102889 As one of the NSUM zealot writes to me, “I will cut you up into pieces when I catch you.” My response to the spammer reads: “Don’t get your shirt bloodied; simply refute my assertions.” And in fact this person is one of the gentle ones. The villain messages that others spam into my inbox are not towards only me but also Somaliland people who may not even aware the existence of NSUM, Dr. Megalommatis or myself Dalmar Kaahin. Now, because of Dr. Megalommatis, NSUM and its supporters’ venomous attacks towards me they hope that once they cast aspersion on my character I will retreat. But in fact, their strategy backfires on them and consolidates my argument that these gangs pump more lethal injections into Somalia’s veins than provide remedies for its turmoil.

Also, NSUM cliques naively presume any Somalilander who speaks out against horrendous atrocity inflicted on Somalia, pillages of its rich marine resources and waste dumps into its crystal-clear waters supports Somali unity, or flip flops between unity and separation. What kind of unity? Somalilanders may ask.

More important than unity is:  harmony and tolerance among the Somali speaking people of East Africa. For instance, from 1960 to 1991 the emotional union between Somalia and Somaliland planted the seeds of discord amongst us. That is, unity created the worst tribal animosities among Somali speaking people.

Of course, Somaliland people hope to witness the day when Somaliland, Djibouti and Somalia are strong, stable, and independent countries that not only cooperate but also confront their adversaries. Similarly, like all the Somali ethnics in the world, Somalilanders sympathise with the Somalis in the Ogaden and NFD regions of Ethiopia and Kenya for their [Somalis] struggle to achieve nonviolent self-determinations. If that is the unity you yearn for—we’re all ears.

Also, the professional heckler, Dr. Megalommatis’ vulgar remarks are not even worth to be dignified with answers. Sadly, he mistakes trash talking for competing popularity contests.

Finally, when an author writes an article regardless of its content he/she expects good rebuttals and not venomous personal attacks. Rebuttals that show—not tell—why the article is worthless. It is these good counter-debates that reshape the author’s thoughts and influence the content of his/her next article. The objective should be to learn from others and appreciate one another’s views.

But Dr. Megalommatis and NSUM members remain undeterred to twist historical facts, obfuscate the real picture of Somaliland and unleash personal attacks against any one who attempts to refute their stories.

What they should know is readers are only interested in facts: the advantages of unity versus disadvantages of separations while providing concrete evidences. Also, readers will more likely pay attention to your argument when you don’t attempt to blur the real reasons that force Somaliland to divorce Somalia, in the first place.

Furthermore, had the so-called NSUM unionists’ relinquished their wicked plot to disintegrate peaceful and democratic republic of Somaliland along feuding tribal enclaves, and encouraged Somalia to pursue Somaliland’s non-violent approaches to conflict resolution instead, probably their unity campaign would have found some audience. But paradoxically, the NSUM unionists remain the biggest obstacle to Somali unity today.
